INFORMATIONS
The Internet connects millions of computers across
the world, it is a collection of thousands of networks that all work together
to share information. The Internet was originally developed in the 1970s
by the US Department of Defense. It began as a research project to connect
a number of different networks. The purpose of the internet was to link
supercomputer centers, in order to support millitary research and computer
science projects. The network was also used for electronic mail, file
transfer, and newsgroups. The Internet backbone is a collection of the
largest networks on the Internet. It provides a high-speed communication
path, and carries the largest volumes of traffic on the Internet. Since
the original backone was established, more than 25,000 networks around
the world have connected to the Internet. Private organizations can use
Internet technologies to create a network called an Intranet. While the
Internet is a worldwide network, an Intranet is an internal network. It
is a secure network in an organization that can be accessed only by people
with authorization, such as employees. An extranet is similiar to an Intranet,
except that it can be accessed by people outside the organization. It
provides different levels of access to users with valid usernames and
passwords. Using an extranet is becoming a very popular way for business
partners to exchange information. Networks use protocols (standards) to
define how computers communicate with each other. The protocol suite used
on the Internet is called the Transport Control Protocol/Internet Protocol
(TCP/IP). TCP/IP enables data to be transmitted between different types
of networks connected to the Internet. TCP/IP divides messages into network
packets to be transmitted over the Internet. A network packet consists
of the IP header field and the TCP header field, each followed by the
data field. Each packet is transmitted individually and can follow different
routes to its destination. Internet Explorer-- When you install Windows
95 or Windows NT on your computer, Microsoft Internet Explorer 4.0 is
installed automatically. But before you can use your browser, you need
to check the TCP/IP configuration and ensure that the network settings
are correct. Let's take a look at how you would configure Internet Explorer.
1. You double-click the Internet Explorer icon
on your desktop.
2. Then you select Internet Options from the View menu.
3. The Internet Options dialog box is displayed.
4. First you need to set up a connection to the Internet.
5. So you select the Connection tab.
6. In this case you want to use the connection wizard, so you click the
Connect button.
7. The Internet Connection Wizard screen is displayed.
8. Then you click Next.
9. The connection wizard offers you three different ways to connect to
the Internet.
10. Lets say you want to connect to the Internet through your LAN.
11. So you select the second option, U want to set up a new connection

12. Then click the Next button.
13. Now you select the Connect using ...(LAN) radio button.
14. And then you select Next.
15. You are asked whether your network is connected through a proxy server.
A proxy server can act as a gateway between your local network amd the
Internet. You don't need to have a proxy server unless your administrator
has one installed and requires that you use it. However, it can improve
the security to your network, filtering requests to and from the Internet.
16. In this case you select the No radio button and click Next.
17. To set up and Internet mail account, You select Yes here.
18. Then you click Next.
19. Now the wizard prompts you for information about your Internet mail
account.

you select the appropriate option.
21. Then you click Next.
22. Now you see a list of your Internet mail account settings.
23. These include the Internet mail, account name, your e-mail address
and display name, your incoming and outgoing e-mail server addresses,
your e-mail account logon information.
24. You can use this screen to confirm your settings or to chang them.
25. In this case you want to use the Internet mail account you selected
without changing any of its settings.
26. So you select No and click Next.
27. Now the wizard offers you the option to set up an internet news account,
which would enable you to join discussion groups over the Internet.

access to an address book with information on other people using the Internet.

a directory service, so you click Yes.
